Information about Dublin Catle

As seat and symbol of the British rule of Ireland for more than seven centuries, Dublin Castle figured largely in Ireland's turbulent history early in the 20th century. It's now mainly used for Irish and EU governmental purposes. The sprawling Great Courtyard is the reputed site of the Black Pool (Dubh Linn, pronounced dove-lin) from which Dublin got its name. In the Lower Castle Yard, the Record Tower, the earliest of several towers on the site, is the largest remaining relic of the original Norman buildings, built by King John between 1208 and 1220. The clock-tower building houses the fabulous Chester Beatty Library. The State Apartments (on the southern side of the Upper Castle Yard)—formerly the residence of the English viceroys and now used by the president of Ireland to host visiting heads of state and EU ministers—are lavishly furnished with rich Donegal carpets and illuminated by Waterford glass chandeliers. The largest and most impressive of these chambers, St. Patrick's Hall, with its gilt pillars and painted ceiling, is used for the inauguration of Irish presidents. The Round Drawing Room, in Bermingham Tower, dates from 1411 and was rebuilt in 1777; numerous Irish leaders were imprisoned in the tower from the 16th century to the early 20th century. The blue oval Wedgwood Room contains Chippendale chairs and a marble fireplace. The Church of the Holy Trinity features carved oak panels, stained glass depicting the viceroy's coat of arms, and an elaborate array of fan vaults. More than 100 carved heads adorn the walls outside; among them, St. Peter, Jonathan Swift, St. Patrick, and Brian Boru.
Enter the castle through the Cork Hill Gate, just west of City Hall. One-hour guided tours are available throughout the day, but the rooms are closed when in official use, so call ahead. The Castle Vaults hold an elegant little patisserie and bistro.

Which are the best bars in Dublin?

Which are the best bars in Dublin?

South city centre:
Cafe en seine is one of the most spectacular cafe bars in Europe. This cosmopolitan bar located on Dawson Street is unique in terms of ambience and style. This is across from Eason on Dawson St near the side entance to Trinity.

Dublin’s first and only southern hemisphere bar, located under the Stephens Green Shopping Centre, Down Under in Major Toms is a mecca of all things Australian, New Zealand and South African. This is in front of Dunne's Stores in Stephen's Green.

North of the Liffey, right on the "board walk thing" near the river are these nice places:
Pravda: a Russian decorated bar (across from Ha'penny Bridge)
Zanzibar: an Easten-influenced trendy bar/cafe (on Ormond Quay)
Voodoo: showcases live original bands (a bit out there on Arran Quay)

If you aren't into crowded city centre pubs:
Oil Can Harrys is on Mount St. (past Merrion Square) and has a student crowd during term time. It has great food and the staff are nice.

Clubs in Dublin:
They charge quite a hefty cover, esp. the ones in the city centre.
1. Ri-Ra
Dame Court (off Dame Street which is near Grafton Street)
2.POD
(near the head Garda station on Harcourt Street)
3. Fireworks: used to be a fire station
(on Tara Street near Trinity)
4. Club M (not nice, but in the Temple Bar area, located in the Blomm's Hotel)
5.Spy Bar is one of Dublin's hippest bars and is situated on South King Street in Powerscourt House.(off Grafton Street)
6. Lillie’s Bordello, Adam Court, Grafton Street, is where visiting pop stars, actors and celebrities hang out for after-show parties.

Out of Dublin:
Johnnie Fox's Pub
Glencullen
Dublin Mountains
Co. Dublin
The highest pub in Dublin and a great place to go on a warm sunny day.

#
don't go to Temple Bar. You'll be disappointed. I like Doyle's but that's because I'm a student. Cafe en Seine would not be my scene at all.

#
Gravity Bar at the top of the Guinness Brewery. Enjoy the best brew at the location where it's made, great atmosphere, great view. Good tour... then go and enjoy a beer in the bar.

#
Depends what you like. If you like banging music, crowds, expensive drink and 'trendy' types, there are places like Cafe En Seine.
If you like a real pub - no blaring TV screens or poncy types, Mulligan's or Hughes'. Hughes' also have live traditional music.

Temple Bar is full of horrid 'trendy' bars.

Are there any gay bars in Dublin?

In Dublin for a few days, and I don't see any around..

#
Hi there,

As already mentioned The George is perceived by many as Dublin's main gay bar. Its pretty good and the music is o.k, but gets a bit boring after a while.

The Dragon (also on Georges St, just up from The George) is a great spot, gets a good crowd and the music is hopping.

Theres also Panti Bar (used to be Gubu) ehich is at the end of Capel Street, just over the Liffey from Parliment Street.

The Front Lounge on Parliment Street is a good bar, mixed crowd, a lot of people tend to go here before they move on to The George or The Dragon.

Other than that there a lot of other clubs have gay nights,

the best (in my opinion) by far is Glitz @ Break For The Border every Tuesday, Great crowd and music. For further info check out:

http://www.pink-pages.org/clubs.asp

http://www.gcn.ie

hope this helps

#
Try 'The George' on South Great George's Street. You can't miss it - it's painted bright purple. It's one of Ireland's oldest gay bars & I think it's been around since the 1980's.

#
The George. Its on Georges Street. Impossible to miss because its bright purple.
I think there might be another gay bar on Georges Street but I don't know what its called.

#
Everyone goes to The George.
But you might wanna watch out, because all the kids crash it.
So when your walking out, watch out for the water balloons/smoke bombs/stink bombs and the bangers.

#
Go for a stroll in the Phoenix Park instead!

Bars in Dublin, Ireland?

im gonig to dublin in a few weeks,
does anyone know of any good bars around "dublin 18"

#
Really depends where you're staying, Dublin 18 is a pretty big place you'd need a car to get around.
Also depends what you're looking for, most places are local pubs there aren't many 'bars', Fillies at leopardstown racecourse would be one.

But there tonnes of excellent pubs, The Magic Carpet in Cornelscourt, Foxrock would be my personal favourite. But there's also The Horse and Hound in Cabinteely, Galloping Green on the N11, Bolands in Stillorgan, Step Inn in Stepaside, The Playwright on Newtown Park Avenue, The Orchard in Stillorgan, The Lep Inn in Leopardstown.
They are the one's off the top of my head.

If you're looking for a bar scene just hope on the bus into the city centre, much better selection.

#
Make sure you go to the Brazen Head pub - oldest pub in the world. Get on a City tour bus that you can get on and off and stop by the pubs as you go.
Temple Bar Area is a great area to stop
Of course - don't forget to tour the Guinness Factory
Dawson Lounge - because it is the smallest bar in Ireland - fits 20 people standing.
Have fun - it's a great city!

#
I don't really know D.18 but these are some places near enough

Winters in Dundrum
McGowans in stillorgan (formally Bollands)
Bakers Corner in Deans grange
Kylies in Mount Merrion
The Goat in Goatstown
The Millhouse in Stillorgan

#
The Leopardstown Inn and Fillies are your best bet and Club 92 is beside the latter though very hard to get in if you're not one of the local gobsh*tes!

Best Shepherd's Pie/Pub Grub in Dublin (Temple Bar)?

Good day! In May my girlfriend and I will be stopping in Dublin on a cruise. We both love Irish food and culture and I'd like to be able to take her to a fun pub/restaurant that serves a really good Shepherd's Pie (her favorite). I'm not sure how much I trust the advice of big websites and the tourist offices and I want to get the people's opinions. I imagine we'll be wandering around the Temple Bar/Trinity College/St. Stephen's Green area quite a bit, but we can certainly take a cab anywhere if needed.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions and help!

#
Gallagher's Boxty House is a traditional Irish pub style restaurant located in the heart of ... 20-21 Temple Bar, Dublin 2,

I got the address online, and I have been and it is great, but cant remember if they had shepherds pie...They did a lovely Irish stew and Colcannon....but it gets very busy, but there are loads of pubs, eateries in Temple Bar and they are all much of a muchness.

Bar-tending in Dublin?

Hi!
I'm currently off from university and am looking to get into bar-tending this year. I don't have any qualifications or anything, however. Would you know of any training programmes and stuff that I could take? How did you get into it yourself if you're one? Any advice would be great. Thanks.

#
would recommend doing the failte Ireland course I know some one who did the course in Dublin and there is alot hands on experience in the course and is highly recognized
National Bar Skills
This course prepares you for start-out employment in the tourism and hospitality industry and in the licensed trade. It is designed for FAS-registered job seekers and mature workers. Training is highly practical, with hands-on experience and confidence-building in actual work situations. Subjects: Bar Operations, Lounge and Wine Service, Bar Food Production and Service, Health, Safety and Law, Professional Development, Sales & Bar Control, Customer Skills. Integrated Professional Work Practice. This course will qualify you to find employment as a bartender in hotels, restaurants and in the licensed trade.

Fáilte Ireland Training Centre (Dublin)
Address : 88-95 Amiens Street
Dublin 1

Phone : 01 8847700
Fax : 01 8556821
E-mail : anisha.sibartie@failteireland.ie

You could also look for part time evening or night time work in bar.Even if it is not bar tending it will be experience in a bar if it small bar they may even show you the running of bar and give you some traning. But best to do course anyways and there will be work experience as part of it.

#
You can also just apply directly to all the pubs you can find. They'll usually start you out waiting tables and collecting glasses, or working as a bar back stacking shelves and washing glasses if you're a bloke. When you've proven yourself capable of being in the front line, they may start to train you in on the bar. It will take a while though, as if you don't have experiences/references it will take time to build up trust to the point where they will trust you with the till as scams are common.

Try to get work in a pub close to where you live so you don't waste your hard earned cash on taxis.

Information about Temple bar Dublin

I have just booked to take my husband to Temple bar Dublin for one night on the 7th march for his birthday. I have booked in to the Fleet street Temple bar hotel. What is the area like and what are the best things to do? We are both really in to 80s music so are there and good clubs/bars that we should go to. what are the prices like and the weather!!! Thanks xx
Update : Also what is the best way to get from the airport to the hotel? bus or taxi? and around how much is this going to cost?
xx

#
temple is VERY expensive!!

so be prepared to spend a fortune!

here is any example i was in temple bar on wednesday..and in temple bar pub it cost....12euro for a pint and a half of Budweiser and 7.50 for a bottle of blue wicked!!!

EDIT..You'll be mad to get a taxi from the airport to the city centre! it cost you an arm and a leg!!
There are buses outside the main terminal!
go for a Dublin bus not the "city link" the city link cost you around 6euro where the Dublin bus goes to the same place for 2.20!!
Oh and the weather....bring an umbrella!!

#
temple bar is great ! it has evrything .... you are proberly better off getting a taxi if you dont know your way around dublin in general is pretty expensive and temple bar is up there for bein expensive !!

have a great time !!
xxxxxx

#
That hotel is right in the middle of everything, Temple Bar has everything there, but its pretty small, so you'll find your way round in an hour.

the music in temple bar is very mixed, so there will be 80's, trad and modern all in the one night, so don't worry.

drink is about €6.50 a pint, but the pubs stay open late with no cover charge, so be like the Italians and sit over your drink, other wise you'll be skint

A taxi should cost between €30-€35 from the airport, if you do get a taxi tell the driver you come over all the time. Other wise you can get a bus that will leave you on O'Connell Street, so you'll need to cross O'Connell bridge, head towards Westmoreland Street, and Fleet St is a small street that runs adjacent to it, the bus is about €5.

The weather will be approx 10c, might rain, might not, you know yourself. If you are staying in Temple bar there will be no reason for you to worry about travelling anywhere else, its all there, the only journey you'll need is the one to the airport and back.

Enjoy your stay

#
Temple Bar is fiercely expensive -- Ireland has a very strong economy and Dublin is especially pricey! Gogarty's is good for Irish trad music, but the Temple Bar area is so small you should easily be able to walk around and hear what you like. Great atmosphere!

I would take the bus from the airport, it's very fast and a pretty ride, and only about five euro last time I was there. A taxi would be too expensive!

#
Temble Bar area is the best area for everything. Has lots of pubs and clubs and lots of things going on. Near to the centre. Weather will be freezing same as UK and it is very very very expensive so bring lots of dosh. Hey your bf has same bday as me!

Bars are there in Dublin centre?

What good and relatively cheap indie bars are there in dublin centre?
There doesn't need to be live music but a good jukebox would be great.
a good indie crowd is what i'm lookin for as close to the temple bar as i can get

#
no bars really cheap in dublin but these ideas might help you out
the globe on south great georges street is very good
http://www.irishtourist.com/event_calend...

bruxelles up top of grafton street near stephens green
http://www.dublinpubscene.com/thepubs/br...

i also have included some indie bars in the capital
http://www.inyourpocket.com/ireland/dubl...

#
I live right beside dublin city centre and i also like indie bars. there is only one though- Eamon Dorans in temple bar but it's not cheap.

Monday- wednesday all long neck bottles are 4euro but other than that your going to be paying 5-6 euro for a pint

excellent place though, there's also bruxcells and fibber mcgees but it's more so 'rockers' in there

dorans is the place your looking for... plus the men aren't exactly bad looking either

#
There is no answer to this question. Cheap and Temple Bar do not mix together, in fact Cheap and Dublin city do not mix either.

#
There is a bar near the Porter house on Parliament street that's sound like what your looking for, sorry I cant remember the name but its on the same side as the Porter house, near Dame street end.

Will have the same prices as all the other bars in temple bar though..

#
live in Dublin and I can assure you there are NO cheap bars ANYWHERE near Temple Bar!

You can try Eammon Doran's, very popular bar with live music downstairs and it's right on Temple Bar.

The Turks Head is also quite good but as I said nowhere is particularly cheap.

Good luck!

How does one find a cheap apartment in Dublin?

I've spent some time in Dublin some time ago. Worked for about a year in building work. Stayed with a few friends here and there. Never had my own place.

I know a lot of places are very expensive. Is there any way to find a cheaper place? Like a dark, dirty place in a bad area? I don;t care if I'm with Romanians and Poles. lol. Just need a chap place. Like to come back there soon, hopefully permanently.

Thanks!
Update : @ Doctor Then you should know there is plenty of work there. I've never had a problem finding a job.

And you should be embarrassed that you do not know the situation of the Romanians and Poles there.

But you are from Cork... Your father is probably your brother, and your mother is probably a sheep!

LOL! Cork she says!
Update 2: @ Orla Immigration to Ireland is not exclusive to EU nationals. You would know that if you have ever been there...

#
I noticed you posted from the US.

If you are not an EU national, you won't be moving back to Ireland anytime soon.

Cheap apartments? In Dublin? You're joking, right?

#
You are clearly trolling.... 14% unemployment... 30% unemployment amongst young people. 50% of the unemployed being 'long term' unemployed.

But in case you aren't a troll.. http://www.daft.ie is the easiest way to find a flat in dublin

#
There is no work in Ireland for the 430,000 unemployed people who currently live here in case you hadn't noticed, the construction industry is dead. So unless you've won the lotto (which I doubt if you are asking about dark, dirty places to live) then I suggest you stay where you are because we really don't need your sort in Ireland.

Do you realise how offensive your statement "I don;t care if I'm with Romanians and Poles" is, there is no lol about that statement that is ignorant & racist. I do hope you are a pesky troll because if you are genuine then you aren't going to get far in life with your attitude.

Edit : Touched a nerve did I? Thanks for the private message you sent me

"From: Albert R.
Subject: Dublin bound
Message: You obviously have never been to Ireland, you dumb feck!"

I replied as succinctly as I could seeing as I do actually live in Ireland & my husband has driven HGVs & worked in the construction industry for over 35 years. He was made redundant 3 years ago. Times are tough here.

Which suburb near Dublin Ireland is a great place to live?

Ill be moving to the area for college, and i don't have a whole lot of money. I still want to live close to the city vented because ill be going to college there, but i still like a slightly more country feel sometimes, and its been suggested for me to find a nice suburb. That's where you're going to help me:) I'm just looking for a small tiny apartment or place for rent thats cheap. Hell if its up to code and i wont die from living there ill take it I'm not picky. So what do you suggest? Which suburb?

#
Dublin is a pretty big city - it has a low density but a large spatial area. Do you mean you'll be going to college in the city centre? Trinity or somewhere nearby?

No rent in Dublin is cheap these days. But you will get better value for money if you try, as an example, Phibsboro, Rathmines, Marino. Look on www.daft.ie to get an idea, you can search by college and 'city centre', 'south Dublin city' and other parameters like that there.

#
Depends on where your college is.... look at the bus route - the further out it is, the cheaper it will be.

The cheapest place to get a tatoo in Dublin

i only want a small one so like
Update : and i really dont care if its bad or what ever its just small lol

#
Please don't cheap out on a tattoo you really do get what you pay for. If it's cheap it will look cheap or really bad. All shops have minimums, call them up and see how low they will go.
Here are some in the Dublin area.
http://maps.google.ca/maps?rls=com.micro...

#
If you are going to put something on your body permanently, it might be worth waiting until you have the money to pay the most competent people in your area to do it.

#
You will get what you pay for. You get a cheap tattoo it will look horrible/fade quickly. If you want a tatt quit being cheap and find yourself a GOOD tattoo parlor not a CHEAP one

Places to eat lunch in Dublin/Dun Laoghaire CHEAP?

I'm studying abroad in Dun Laoghaire this summer, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me of cheap places to eat a light lunch in that area and what the estimated costs are? I don't like heavy things, so a light salad or sandwich will do.. but I really don't want to pay over $10 for that since I need a cheap place to eat lunch every day for 6 weeks since my host family will only provide me with breakfast and dinner. I'm a college student on a budget, so I would appreciate any help! Thanks.

#
There are a number of Mc Donalds etc. in the town and most of the grocery stores make fresh sandwiches daily. A sandwich and Coke in a grocery store would be less than €5. There are loads of little bistros that also do lunch specials for under €10. You will be spoiled for choice. It would be even cheaper to buy a plain roll and some ham and cheese to make your own.
You won't starve.

#
You can check out www.mylunch.ie, they usually have good information on places for lunch.
You'll need to look up Dublin South County to get information on Dun Laoghaire.

#
No. I don't know of anyplace in Ireland where you can pay for lunch in US dollars, dear.

If your accommodation has a kitchen, you could prepare your own and bring it with you.

Weekend in Dublin in February?

We are a group of 4 who want to stay in Dublin in Feburary 2007, we would like a central hotel and a cheap flight from Heathrow.
Any suggrstions?
We would like a good company that could take us from Heathrow to Dublin to hotel (via taxi) at a good price!

#
We just got back from a trip to Dublin and stayed at the Leeson Bridge Guest Househttp://www.leesonbridgehouse.ie It was really lovely, about 5 minutes walk from St Stephen's Green and about 10 minutes walk from Temple Bar and the river, which is about as central as you can get on a budget in Dublin, as far I as I could tell. We got a really cheap deal on the room from http://www.laterooms.com which also has loads of other options listed by price and distance from the centre.

If there are 4 of you and cost is your main concern you might be able to stay in a hostel and get your own private room. A lot of them offer ensuite facilities as well. Check what's available on:
http://www.youth-hostels-in.com
It isn't all youth hostels, a lot of cheap hotels and guest houses are on there too, and you can search by availability.

If you want to know if a place you're thinking of is any good or might be a cr-phole, check out
http://www.tripadvisor.com
for reviews of hotels from other travellers.

I've always found that Skyscanner http://www.skyscanner.net is great for a summary of flight prices from all of the budget airlines, and http://www.cheapflights.co.uk is also a good summary site. These both allow you to compare flight prices from lots of different airlines and travel agents.

The Aircoach http://www.aircoach.ie is an excellent luxury coach which costs 7euros, (or 12 euros return) and goes from directly outside the arrivals section of Dublin airport on a circuit around all the main hotels in Dublin every 15 minutes. It's much cheaper than a taxi and just as easy and comfortable.

Have a great time - Dublin is a fantastic city and I'm sure you'll have a riot.

#
If  you are looking for good value accommodation central Dublin, you could try one of the Jury's Inn hotels, which are good quality and centrally located.

If you are looking for even more of a budget you could try a Hostel in Dudlin, including the award winning Four Courts Hostel, people have the wrong idea about hostels and they are very different from peoples perceptions, I am a huge traveler and use them all the time.

For a flight, why not try another airport other then Heathrow, ty Stanstead where you can use Ryanair, if not you can ty bmi or British Airways.

#
Try www.visitdublin.ie.
Also www.dublinpubguide.com/ which also has Pub guides etc.

There ate plenty of Taxi's at the airport that will tak you where ever you need to go. There is also a bus service to the city centre.
www.ryanair.com light will work out cheaper the earlier you book it.
Enjoy your trip here
